Animal welfare

At Van Rooi, we work with animals. This means ensuring proper living conditions for animals is at the top of our agenda. It is important that this is well organised throughout the supply chain, from breeding and housing to transport to the abattoir.

This is why we hold the Beter Leven quality mark and are initiators of the Verde Varken Foundation. We also organise evening events for farmers to share knowledge, and we work with health programmes that limit the use of antibiotics, while also offering professional guidance on farms.

Beter Leven quality mark

Meat that carries the Beter Leven quality mark stands for animal-friendly meat production. The more stars a livestock farmer has, the more criteria they have met. Van Rooi emphasises the animal protection quality mark by working primarily with like-minded livestock farmers.

Safe for consumers

Food safety should simply be a given for consumers. That is why we apply strict controls at every link in the supply chain.

Our BRC and IFS quality systems ensure that nothing is left to chance. We guarantee the quality of our raw materials and ensure that our working processes are hygienic. These measures enable us to eliminate all risk, so consumers can enjoy safe, fair meat products with complete peace of mind.

Circular = no waste

At Van Rooi, we have always been conscientious. Towards our people and our environment. And also towards our animals. That is why there is no room for waste.

Circular thinking is therefore part of everything we do. We use as much of each animal as possible. Any parts not suitable for meat production are passed on to other sectors. Some examples includes animal feed, the pharmaceutical industry, protein or fat products and even fertilisers. This is our way of ensuring that every part of the animal is put to good use.

The protein transition

The food industry is in the midst of a protein transition. The focus is increasingly shifting towards alternative protein sources such as legumes, nuts and grains, as well as innovative solutions such as cultured meat. Van Rooi is keeping pace with these developments. As a result, we have developed a range of hybrid meat products in which some of the animal proteins have been replaced by plant-based proteins. In doing so, we are helping to feed the growing world population in an environmentally friendly and healthy way.

Sustainable housing

At Van Rooi, we operate in an environment that is geared towards a sustainable future.

One powerful example is our processing facility in Helmond, which was built in accordance with GPR standards. In other words, virtually all the materials used are recyclable, and the building is energy efficient thanks to solar panels and additional systems for heat recovery and water purification.

Fewer food miles

At Van Rooi, we strive to keep food miles to a minimum. These are the kilometres travelled to transport meat for further processing elsewhere. Food miles are kept to a minimum because the entire processing process takes place under one roof, thanks in part to our own freezer space with capacity for 10,000 pallets. We also enjoy a central location, with our farmers in Brabant and Limburg literally on our doorstep.

Efficient water use and packaging

We save water by making our cleaning and production processes more efficient and by using more sustainable packaging materials. Improved coordination of packaging and more efficient transport organisation reduces material use, transport kilometres, CO₂ emissions and water consumption.

Safety at work

Meat processing relies heavily on tools, ranging from knives and hooks to machines and pallet trucks. That is why we only work with well-trained employees and certified employment agencies that meet our strict requirements.

Safety is the most important issue in all our work processes. It is essential that all employees and visitors are able to enjoy a safe working or visiting environment, which all begins with effective control measures.
