03The driving forces behind our success

Three core values, one vision

At Van Rooi, family, control and expertise are the pillars of our success. They come together to ensure a robust, sustainable and reliable supply chain.

We were raised on a farm, where we learned the value of hard work. We also discovered the importance of healthy food and the power of genuine teamwork. That same team spirit is still the foundation of our company. As a team, we empower each other and work together to build an organisation that we are proud to pass on to the next generation.

Van Rooi manages the entire supply chain, from farm to fork. We build lasting relationships with livestock farmers and work closely with meat processors, foodservice providers and retailers. We carefully manage every link in the supply chain, from slaughter and cooling to packaging and transport. This enables us to guarantee quality at every stage. Everything under one roof, everything under control.

Thanks to our international market expertise and in-depth knowledge of meat and food, we are a vital link in the entire supply chain, from breeding and livestock farming to processing, retail and export. We connect our partners and work towards a future-proof supply chain focused on producing the finest meat products, from farm to fork. We create sustainable value for our partners and consumers.

History

From the barn to the global market

Our journey has taken us from our roots on the farm to our current position as a leading player in the global meat industry. Generations of knowledge, ambition and collaboration serve as the foundation of our business, with tradition and innovation as the pillars.

1953

Van Rooi Group: it all started with 3 piglets

Van Rooi is a family business with a long tradition. We cherish our past, but we have a constant drive to innovate. To stay ahead in the pig industry, which itself is always evolving. Read how the Van Rooi entrepreneurial family grew into a modern and leading company, attuned to today’s needs and sustainability demands. And always with an eye on the world around us.

1953

From farm to fork

At Van Rooi, we dedicate ourselves each day to delivering high-quality pork to consumers, fresh and efficiently. Our story began in 1953 with the very first piglets. That year, seventeen-year-old Martien van Rooi took his piglets to the market in Lieshout, Brabant — in search of butchers who would process the meat and bring it to consumers.

1977

A new leap in efficiency

Martien expanded his pig trade through his dairy farm, supplying and transporting piglets and pigs. In 1977, he built an export collection facility where pigs could be selected by weight and quality for export. This drive for efficiency characterised Martien’s mindset — and still defines the way we run our business today.

1990

The next generation

By the 1990s, Martien’s sons Marc and Addy were fully involved in the business. Pig exports expanded further as they began selling directly to markets in Spain, Italy, France and Germany — all from the collection facility in Lieshout.

1995

Pig slaughtering begins

Martien, Marc and Addy decided to slaughter pigs in the Netherlands in order to market the meat directly, due to export regulations on live pigs. As a result, Van Rooi acquired the Sanders Eindhoven slaughterhouse in Hapert in 1995. This allowed us to add value to the meat ourselves. The decision proved wise, as the slaughterhouse grew rapidly — so rapidly that, after several expansions, the facility could no longer keep up with demand.

2001

Shifting focus

We chose to concentrate slaughtering operations in Hapert and move processing activities to Someren. To increase slaughter capacity, the cutting room in Hapert was renovated. The number of slaughters continued to rise. Meanwhile, the role of the export facility declined, as pigs were transported directly from farms to the slaughterhouse. Its focus shifted increasingly towards sows and piglets.

2006

First pile for our Helmond slaughterhouse

Slaughter numbers in Hapert were growing so fast that the site had reached its limits. After discussions with the municipalities of Hapert and Helmond, Van Rooi decided to build a new slaughterhouse in Helmond. In 2006, more than fifty years after taking his first pig to market in Lieshout, Martien van Rooi himself laid the first foundation pile.

2007

Giving substance to our sustainable character

Many of our pigs still come from our own livestock trade in Lieshout. The origin of the meat is of great importance to us. Van Rooi values sustainable partnerships with regional pig and cattle farmers. This local approach is at the heart of our sustainability ambitions. After slaughter, beef and pork cuts are distributed to our own locations, to partners in the meat industry, and to retailers.

2008

Start of beef production

In 2008, Van Rooi expanded its product range with beef. We founded ProViande Beef and began cutting and deboning beef carcasses, enabling us to offer our customers a wider selection of meat products.

2014

At the forefront of sustainability

2014 marked an important milestone for Van Rooi. With the significant expansion of our production facility, we took major steps forward in the farm-to-fork process. The launch of our modernised and expanded slaughterhouse put Van Rooi at the forefront of sustainability in meat and meat products.

2023

Acquisition of beef slaughterhouse

To strengthen our farm-to-fork vision for beef, Van Rooi acquired the Tomassen beef slaughterhouse in Someren in 2023. This gave us full control of the chain, ensured quality and transparency, and reduced food miles by working locally. This step reinforced our position in the market and contributed to a more sustainable future.

2025

The next Van Rooi generation

Van Rooi remains a true family business. In 2025, Marc and Addy van Rooi are preparing the company for the future together with their children, who have been involved in the business from an early age. Each with their own specialism, they are building on the foundation laid by previous generations.
